1987 AIDs Awareness March
In 1987, the organization ACT UP hosted an AIDS awareness rally on Wall Street. This demonstration was done to put more pressure on the government to approve the drugs that could potentially be life saving to those with AIDS. In their flier, they have a short list of demands that work towards their goal of promoting AIDS awareness and public health. One of the demands was for the drugs to be made affordable. (ACT UP) Their work also led to a protest on Washington for AIDS awareness. One notable photo is of a man with Kaposi’s Sarcoma during the march in Washington (Library of Congress). He is one of the many people living with the disease.
Significance:
The reason that this is so significant is because the protesters used Wall Street as their home base to get their message across. The used the power of Wall Street and the name that it has to get their message across to the nation. This is one of the reasons why Wall Street is so significant. Since it is so well known and so powerful, it can be used as a weapon. A weapon used to spread words, and more importantly a message.
